Removing the track copies the picture and finishes quickly. A silent track keeps audio at zero, for players that require a soundtrack.

How to mute a video

1. Drop one video. Audio-only files are refused here. 2. Leave “Remove the audio track” when you want no soundtrack at all. Pick “Keep a silent audio track” when a player or a form rejects a video with zero audio streams. 3. Press “Mute video” and play the download with the volume up.

Removing the track copies the picture, so a long file usually finishes quickly. A silent track re-encodes only the audio at zero, which takes longer than a copy.

Strip and silence are not the same file

Strip drops every audio stream. The download is a little smaller and some editors show no audio. Silence keeps one AAC track whose samples are zero, so the timeline still has sound, just none you can hear.

Remove audio from video is the strip-only page. This URL is the one with the choice. If you still need the words, extract MP3 first, then mute a copy.

What this does not change

Faces, logos and on-screen captions stay. Mute does not blur a region or crop the frame. A file that already has no audio track can be stripped. Silence needs an audio track to turn down.

How to choose strip or a silent track

1. Leave Remove the audio track when the player should show no soundtrack. 2. Choose Keep a silent audio track when a site rejects a video with no audio stream. 3. Play the download with the volume up before you post it.

Strip copies the picture and finishes quickly. A silent track re-encodes only the audio, so it takes longer. Remove audio from video is the strip-only page.

Frequently asked questions

Which option should I use?

Strip is the default and the faster one. Use a silent track only when the next tool complains that the video has no audio.

Will the picture look worse?

Strip copies the video stream. Silence copies it too, and only replaces the audio with silence. A fallback re-encodes the picture if the container refuses the copy.

Can I mute several clips at once?

One video at a time. Finish the download, then drop the next file.

Is the video uploaded?

No. FFmpeg runs in this tab.

Is the silent file smaller?

No. It still carries an audio stream, just one you cannot hear. Strip is the smaller file.

Can I get the sound back from the download?

No. Extract MP3 first if you still need the words, then mute a copy.
