How to extract images from a PDF

1. Drop the PDF. 2. Leave Original selected if you want each JPEG to stay a JPEG. Choose JPG or PNG only when every file must be the same type. 3. Press “Extract images”. 4. Download the file, or a ZIP when there are several.

This reads the image objects inside the PDF. It does not photograph the page. A report made of text, with no photos, produces nothing to save. Use PDF to JPG for a picture of each page.

What you get back

Photos placed in the file are the usual case: a camera JPEG inside a PDF comes back as that JPEG. Drawings stored as raw pixels come back as PNG. Very small marks, such as bullets, are skipped when a real photo is present.

What this page does not do

It does not OCR the words, and it does not rebuild a page that was scanned as one big picture into separate objects that were never separate. A scan of a whole page is one image, and that image is what you get. Nothing is uploaded.

How to tell a photo from a page render

1. If you need the picture that was placed in the PDF, use this page and leave Original on. 2. If you need a picture of the whole page, including text, use PDF to JPG. 3. Open one download and check that the subject is the photo, not a screenshot of the page.

A scanner often stores each page as one JPEG. You will get that JPEG, which may be the whole page. Vector charts and plain text do not become image files.

Frequently asked questions

Why did I get one image per page?

A scanner often saves each page as a single JPEG. That JPEG is the embedded image. PDF to JPG renders the page again. This page takes the file that was already inside.

The PDF is only text. Where are the images?

There are none to extract. Charts drawn as vectors are not image files. Export the page with PDF to JPG if you need a picture of it.

Can I keep the original JPEG quality?

Yes. Leave the format on Original. Choosing JPG or PNG redraws the pixels in this tab, which can change a JPEG.

Is the PDF uploaded?

No. pdf-lib and PDF.js read the images in this browser.

Why is the JPEG smaller than PDF to JPG?

This page copies the embedded file. PDF to JPG draws the page again at the resolution you pick, so it can be a different size.

Several photos came out in a ZIP. Can I get one?

Yes. The page lists each file. The ZIP is only there when there is more than one.
